Legionnaires’ Disease

This uncommon form of pneumonia is caused by legionella bacteria, which thrive in hot, moist conditions in soil and water. Air conditioners, cooling towers, hot tubs and spa baths may be sources of infection if they have not been properly cleaned and maintained.

Infection cannot be spread from person to person and is usually contracted by inhaling aerosol droplets from a contaminated cooling tower or spa. The incubation period is approximately 10 days, and smokers or those with weakened immunity are most at risk.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease are flu-like and include headache, fever, chills, diarrhoea and muscle aches, followed by respiratory problems and pneumonia. Symptoms of this disease usually begin to appear within six days of being exposed to the bacteria. In some cases, symptoms can be more severe, including diarrhoea, mental confusion and kidney failure. If this is the case for you, see your doctor immediately.

Prevention

There is no vaccine for Legionnaires’ disease. Avoid using hot tubs and spa baths that do not appear to have been properly maintained. It is also important that air conditioners and evaporative cooling units are properly maintained to avoid any bacterial growth inside the units.

Being mindful when using potting mix will also lower your chances of contracting the disease. You can do this by wearing a mask and gloves when handling soil, compost or potting mix, washing your hands, and storing potting mix in a cool, dry place.

Treatment

The disease is treatable with antibiotics. Death occurs in about 10% of cases.
