Coughs, Colds and Chest Infections

Respiratory tract infections are a common health issue for international travellers; they affect one in four people during a four-week stay. The risk of contracting this type of illness is higher during travel because of increased exposure to large numbers of people in crowded situations, including aircraft cabins, airport terminals, trains, buses, cruise ships, shopping centres and popular tourist sites.

Symptoms

  • A runny, blocked nose, sore throat and cough may suggest a cold, particularly if testing for COVID-19 is negative. If accompanied by a cough, fever, and muscle aches and pains, the diagnosis is probably influenza.
  • A cough producing green-yellow sputum is suggestive of bronchitis or a bacterial infection.
  • A runny nose with sneezing and itchy eyes is likely to be an allergy rather than an infection.

While most respiratory tract infections will subside on their own, you should seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms develop:

  • a temperature over 40°C
  • deteriorating COVID-19 symptoms, particularly shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • copious green or yellow sputum
  • severe sore throat and swollen glands
  • prolonged illness for more than seven days.

Smokers are at increased risk of contracting respiratory tract infections.

Prevention

Cold viruses spread from person to person through infected droplets from the mouth and nose.

Reduce your risk of catching a cold by washing your hands often (especially after coughing or sneezing), avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and not touching your face with unwashed hands.

Treatment

Medications to relieve symptoms, including decongestants, antihistamines and antibiotics, should be considered for your medical kit. It is also recommended that you rest for a few days, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid smoking.
