Coronaviruses: COVID-19, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV

In recent years, three coronaviruses (CoV) have emerged as a threat to human health: SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19), and MERS-CoV. Coronaviruses can cause illnesses similar to the common cold or potentially more serious diseases, including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

Prevention

How can we prevent the spread of COVID-19?

  • Wear a well-fitting effective mask in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces.
  • Good hygiene and cough/sneeze etiquette are the best methods to prevent the spread of most viruses.
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
  • Cough and sneeze into a disposable tissue or into the elbow, and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.
