Tanzania

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and one of the oldest known inhabited areas on Earth, with fossil remains dating back about two million years. A country of geographical extremes, Tanzania is home to the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro, and one of the world’s deepest lakes, Lake Tanganyika.

Tanzania’s climate is varied; temperatures in the highlands range between 10 and 20°C, while the rest of the country rarely drops below 20°C.

Pre-travel Preparation Will Help Protect Your Health While You Are Away

Tanzania's geography brings unique challenges to travellers. Consult a travel doctor prior to departure to assess your risks in relation to your medical history and travel plans, as some diseases like meningitis have a peak season when the disease is more prevalent in parts of Tanzania. Our doctors prescribe appropriate vaccinations and medications that may minimise your risk of contracting potentially deadly diseases while you are away.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude illness, or acute mountain sickness (AMS), needs to be considered by the adventurous traveller planning to tackle Mt Kilimanjaro. Altitude illness affects many travellers visiting mountainous regions or undertaking high-altitude treks, in some cases with very serious consequences. Medication can be used to facilitate the process of acclimatisation to the rarefied atmosphere at high altitudes. Before your departure, it is important to discuss your specific risk with a doctor who understands the effects of high altitude travel.
